Broncos Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Posted on 15 March 2010 by NFLShare

Kyle Orton remains the Broncos’ starting quarterback – at least that’s what is believed to be the case because coach Josh McDaniels hasn’t publicly addressed the situation since Brady Quinn was acquired from Cleveland. However, he reportedly called Orton following the trade and said he remains the starter.

But there’s little doubt that McDaniels believes Quinn is a good fit for his offense, and that no matter who is atop the depth chart entering offseason workouts there will be a fierce competition for the job.

It makes sense that Orton remains the starter for now. If Quinn takes 70 percent of the snaps next season, an incentive clause in his contract would call for a $5.9 million bonus, according to the Denver Post.

Broncos Get Brady Quinn from Browns: Does McDaniels Have His Man?

A year after stirring the pot by attempting to land Matt Cassel in a trade with New England, Josh McDaniels has opened up the same can of worms that alienated Denver’s star quarterback from the front office.

Except this time McDaniels got his man.

The question is, for the second year in a row, was the idea of making a trade at quarterback really the right move?

Last season, McDaniels wasn’t satisfied with Jay Cutler, a Pro Bowl-level quarterback, and tried to go for a quarterback in “his image” in Cassel, a guy he built up in his own system with the Patriots.

The trade talks blew up in his face, Cutler was spurned, and a trade for draft picks and the Broncos’ current starter, Kyle Orton, followed.

Of course, now the same story (only different characters) is being told again, after McDaniels sent the little-used Peyton Hillis (along with conditional draft picks) to the Cleveland Browns for their disgruntled young quarterback, Brady Quinn.

After another 8-8 season, the Broncos are still where they started when McDaniels took over, except now they are facing even more questions at quarterback, as they have a young quarterback who fizzled in Cleveland, and enjoys the weight room more than, well, just about anything else.

As for Orton, he still appears to have the starting job, is still a restricted free agent, and appeared to do enough in 2009 to keep the confidence that McDaniels instilled in him in the preseason last year.

The issue here is, for the fans (and for the team), if Brady Quinn is a guy McDaniels feels can step up and be a good NFL passer, then the switch needs to be made this week.

This can’t be a full-blown competition. If Quinn is “the guy” then he has to be standing in first place from day one. Orton can’t have this false hope of keeping the job. Chris Simms and Tom Brandstater can’t begin to create thoughts in their heads that they can win the job.

The questions needs to stop. The rumors needs to stop here and continue on with Brandon Marshall.

The quarterback position, one that was as concrete as can possibly be two years ago, needs to be back at that stage again.

Perhaps Quinn isn’t an ideal transition piece at the position right away. Maybe trading for him or starting him means the Broncos have to experience another sub-par season.

But whatever it does mean, we have to find out now. This can’t drag out into training camp, and into preseason, or mess with whatever kind of success the Broncos have in 2010.

This writer actually believes Brady Quinn has something to give to the NFL, and in particular, he can thrive in an offense like McDaniels has the ability to create and run.

Quinn is a former first-round pick. He was the golden boy of a dead franchise. He’s had his confidence shaken in every way possible in Cleveland, and amidst all the turmoil, competition, injuries, losses, and letdowns, he’s actually only played in 14 games.

That’s not enough to tell you that he can’t be successful in this league. But somehow, McDaniels believes it’s almost enough to prove that he can .

Whether that ends up being correct or not, is not the immediate concern. Josh McDaniels and the Denver Broncos confidently heading into one direction and staying the course, however, is.

Brady Quinn Hopes to Succeed among Long Line of Post—Elway Broncos QBs

QB Brady Quinn was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Denver Broncos today for RB Peyton Hillis and a future sixth round draft pick.

As a Broncos fan, I approve this trade.

Denver has a solid backfield with 2009’s leading rookie rusher, Knowshon Moreno, returning, but the Broncos need help at QB and Quinn will be a welcome competitor to try to unseat single—term incumbent, Kyle Orton.

Orton is a solid, Trent Dilfer—esque quarterback who makes few mistakes and can manage the game as long as he is supported by a strong rushing attack and a top shelf defense, both of which he enjoyed early in the 2009 season.

But, the former Chicago Bear field marshal lacks the ability to stretch the field with his arm.

With Orton at the helm, Denver’s offense is limited and struggles to put up huge offensive numbers, as was evident last season.

Quinn will enter Denver’s training camp with the opportunity to compete for the starting spot and he should benefit from Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels’ tutelage at the QB position.

McDaniels previously coached Patriots QBs Tom Brady and Matt Cassell to on—field success.

Cleveland should benefit from this trade, as well, by improving their backfield.

Peyton Hillis is a solid and shifty, if not spectacular, runner and has fared well at times in the league, most notably during a late season stretch during the 2008 season in which he had several impressive showings before suffering a season—ending injury.

One of his most notable appearances was against the New York Jets, in which he rushed for well over 100 yards and scored a couple of TDs at the Meadowlands.

Though Quinn is not yet a polished NFL quarterback, he has the potential to become a very good football player.

The former Notre Dame All—American possesses the physical tools required for NFL success and he has the arm strength and accuracy to make the throws required of a top flight professional quarterback.

Quinn merely needs to demonstrate that he can do so at the highest level.

Denver is among the league’s elite at the receiver position as long their existing trio of Brandon Marshall (doubtful), Eddie Royal (almost certain) and TE Tony Scheffler (hopeful) remains intact.

With that in mind, Quinn has the downfield passing ability to help Royal return to his first year form, in which ex—Bronco signal caller, Jay Cutler, helped the former Virginia Tech wideout set the NFL rookie record for most catches in a season.

Either Denver quarterback stands to benefit greatly from the aforementioned mile high value targets, as long as each remains in the Mile High City for the 2010 season.

That notwithstanding, I would still like to see the Broncos move up high enough in the 2010 NFL Draft to select to select Texas Longhorns QB, Colt McCoy.

This time of year, though, we can only wait and see if, when and how Denver will eventually find and hold onto a worthy successor to Mr. Elway.

Brady Quinn Traded To Denver Broncos: Josh McDaniels Gets What He Wants

It was a classic spit take.

Upon reading the news of Brady Quinn’s trade to the Denver Broncos for fullback Peyton Hillis and two late round draft picks, I proceeded to soak my laptop screen in soda.  It completely caught me off guard.

What was surprising was not that Quinn got moved but rather where he got moved to. It was beginning to look like the Broncos were going to commit to Kyle Orton for the foreseeable future. Analysts thought the Broncos would ride Orton for a few years while head coach Josh McDaniels developed a draft pick.

Not anymore.

A year ago, McDaniels stirred the pot by attempting to trade then-starter Jay Cutler to acquire Matt Cassel from New England.  That didn’t work. Cutler got mad and was on his way to Chicago while Orton was sent to Denver.  Orton had not played in an offensive system like McDaniels’.  Orton’s play was a big question mark heading into 2009.

Even though he started out strong, Orton soon reverted to what he always will be as an NFL quarterback: solid but not spectacular and not good enough to lead a team to the Super Bowl.

Now enter Quinn for 2010.

I am not saying Quinn can lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl, at least not this season. What he already has for an advantage over Orton is this: he knows the offensive system better.  Quinn played for Charlie Weis, McDaniels’ predecessor in New England as offensive coordinator.

In other words, McDaniels finally got his Cassel.  Just not THE Cassel.  The job he started in 2009, he finished in 2010.   He has what he wanted, so now it is up to him to coach up Quinn and help him realize his potential.

There is little doubt that Quinn’s confidence is just about shot.  Three seasons in Cleveland with two coaching staffs waffling on whether or not he is the quarterback of the future (despite less than a full season of games started under his belt) can’t be good for a young quarterback.

It will be interesting to see if any teams start sniffing around Orton in the days and weeks ahead.  If Orton signs with someone else, that additional first round pick would be coupled with the no. 10 or 11 (pending coin toss with Jacksonville) as well another first rounder from whomever lands wide receiver Brandon Marshall.  That’s THREE first round picks the Broncos could have.  The question is if it is worth it.

Quinn’s tenure in Cleveland and shutter, but let’s not forget the Browns were one of the hottest teams in the league to end the season.  Quinn did miss the final two games due to foot  surgery, but Quinn was not turning the ball over like he was earlier in the season.

The bottom line is that for the first three years of his career, Quinn was stuck in a poor organization.  The follies of the Browns are well documented and Quinn now goes to an organization with a head coach famous for his work with young quarterbacks.  McDaniels turned Cassel into a solid starter, and Cassel hadn’t started a game since high school.

Think of what he will be able to do with a quarterback who started in college and is already familiar with his offense.

So once again more drama arrives for the Broncos at the quarterback position.  At least this one has to do with an arrival instead of a departure.

Brady Quinn Traded To Denver Broncos, So What Happens To Kyle Orton?

Much to the dismay of ESPN Insider, Adam Schefter, FOXSports Insider, Jay Glazer has reported that Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn has been traded to the Denver Broncos for Peyton Hillis, a 2010 6th round pick, and a 2011 late round pick.

This is a surprising move that will shock fans in Denver, after a solid season for current starter Kyle Orton.

Quinn, a former first-round draft pick, has not lived up to the hype he received coming out of Notre Dame, and has mightily struggled in Cleveland.

What does this mean for the Broncos?

The impending departure of Brandon Marshall, and now the arrival of Brady Quinn, leaves Bronco fans wondering what will come next. Orton passed for 3,802 yards and 21 touchdowns, earning a QB rating of 86.8.

Apparently, that isn’t good enough for Josh McDaniels. Brady Quinn now has an opportunity to develop considerably well in the Denver West Coast offensive attack, that has up and coming running back, Knowshon Moreno, and speedy wideout Eddie Royal.

I expect Quinn to come to Colorado with a clean slate, and work hard in the offseason to compete with Orton for the starting job.
